Rory Nolan is a senior associate in Quinn Emanuel’s London office.  He joined the firm in 2021.  His practice focuses on commercial litigation, contentious insolvency and complex restructuring matters.  Rory was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in 2016 and has almost ten years’ experience as a litigator in New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Whilst equally adept as a general commercial litigator, Rory’s specialisms focus on contentious insolvency matters with particular expertise in voidable transaction claims, bondholder disputes, fast turnaround restructuring cases, director duties claims, and various other litigation issues arising in the zone of insolvency.  Rory also regularly advises private equity clients on a vast array of issues relating to carry disputes and other issues caused by fund restructurings.   In these fields, Rory has advised large ad-hoc bondholder groups, various hedge funds and private equity firms, insolvency practitioners, financial advisers, directors and corporate management teams (debtors/company side), shareholders and government bodies across a broad spectrum of sectors.  These sectors include infrastructure (public and private), real estate, construction, financial services, public services, and manufacturing.

Prior to joining the firm, Rory practiced as a solicitor at a leading New Zealand full-service law firm, and as a barrister at New Zealand’s pre-eminent Chambers.  During his time in New Zealand, Rory appeared in every major New Zealand court (as counsel or junior counsel), including the Supreme Court of New Zealand in a landmark voidable transaction case.

Rory is a graduate of the University of Auckland, where he received the Faculty of Law Dean’s Academic Excellence Award for graduating in the top 10% of his cohort.  He completed a Master of Laws (specializing in commercial law and international arbitration) at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).  Rory graduated with Distinction from the LSE and was the winner of The Blackstone Chambers Prize for best overall performance in Commercial Law.
